Where People Move to When They Leave Austin For Other States

Austin is used to being the popular person at the party, but that’s starting to change as the migration flow into Austin has slowed. So where is everyone going?

U-haul recently released data that highlights where Austin residents tend to go when they leave Texas. A handful of western cities are drawing many Austinites out-of-state. According to the report, the top five out-of-state metro destinations for people moving out of Austin are Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Atlanta. This means a lot of local residents who depart Texas end up relocating to the following states:

  • Colorado – Denver, CO is the #1 out-of-state metro destination for Austinites.

  • California – Los Angeles and San Francisco in CA are among the most popular destinations for Austin leavers.

  • Arizona – Many Austinites head to Phoenix, AZ when moving out of state.

  • Georgia – Atlanta, GA also ranks as a top destination for those leaving Texas.

Anecdotally I have had clients move to states like Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and North Carolina, driven by climate, political and job-related decisions.

The full U-Haul 2025 Mid-Year Migration Trends report provides more detail on these moving patterns and is a great source for understanding where Texans are coming and going.
